Abstract. The upper crust location of the sources of the Spitak
earthquake 07.12.1988 and its aftershocks is proved. It is demonstrated that
seismological network in the region allowed unequivocal focal depth
identification based on the kinematic data. Waveforms of all the Spitak earthquakes are typical of the sources in the upper
crust. It is noted that mantle earthquakes in Caucasus have been revealed up to
now only in the Tersk-Sundja depression.
Keywords: deep
(mantle) earthquakes, crustal earthquakes, waveform character.
