Abstract. A method for calculating seismic hazard curves on free-surface is proposed. Its validity is illustrated by hypothetical situation, quite common with seismotectonic and soil profile conditions in platform regions: low level of local activity neighboring with active deep seismic source zone, and shallow bedrock overlaid by consolidated soil profile. It is shown that description of local conditions of critical facility siting by VS30 (average velocity of shear waves in upper 30 m of soil profile) is not sufficient. Though such description provides in general higher values of spectral amplitudes, however, it is does not take into account possible resonance phenomena. Besides, it ignores attenuation of energy by soil profile because of inelastic behavior.
