Abstract. A comparative analysis of macro-seismic and instrumental data for the Muong Ang earthquake (January 8, 2018) in the North-West region of Vietnam was carried out. The got results have shown a good correspondence between the macro-seismic and instrumental data for this earthquake and between them with the tectonic data. A detailed study of the Muong Ang earthquake in respect to tectonic feature revealed that the process in the Muong-Ang earthquake focal zone consists of 3 aftershock series with three development stages: The first aftershock series was distributed quite concentratedly in an ellipse-shaped area on the left wing of the Tuan Giao fault at its end part on region Sa Dung, Muong Ban, then the aftershock activity gradually moved to the North–North-East. Finally, the later aftershocks series develop and shifted to the South compared. Such process is evidence not only shows a good correspondence between the manifestations of seismic activity with the tectonic characteristics, but also confirms the current activity of the Tuan Giao fault and other faults in this area. The results also suggest that the Tuan Zao Fault extends not only to the Sha Dung and Muong Ban areas, as shown on the existing tectonic map, but it can extend further South to the Chieng So area.
